Whether you are just starting out on your own, a newlywed, or you have decided it was time to finally stop eating out and start cooking, you will need some basic supplies.

Unless you are a Master Chef in an expensive restaurant, you will never have everything, but with the following list you will have most of what you need and be able to improvise with the rest.

You'll want to start out with a basic cookbook. You need one whose directions are simple to read and follow. Some good basic cookbooks are The Pillsbury Cookbook, The Better Homes and Garden Cookbook and the Betty Crocker Cookbook. These can be found at any bookstore along with most retail stores.

The following supplies can be bought in a cooking specialty store. However, until you get used to cooking and also to get the most from your money, any retail store will carry most if not all the items listed.

To start your kitchen you will need:

Knives

A paring knife

A boning knife

A butcher knife

A serrated knife

A carving knife

Cooking Items

Three different size cooking pots with lids

A 10 or 12 inch skillet with lid

A medium size roasting pan

A Casserole dish

A 13 x 9 inch cake pan

A loaf pan

An 8 inch square (1 ½ quart) baking pan

Two cookie sheets

A wire rack

Other cooking supplies

Three sizes of mixing bowls (metal is best)

A measuring cup

Measuring spoons

Mixer

Blender

Set of plastic containers with lids for leftovers

Cutting board

Strainer

Can opener

Meat thermometer

Vegetable peeler

Whisk

Rubber spatula

Metal spatula

Turkey baster

Egg separator

Slotted spoon

Tongs

Rolling pin

Pancake turner

Meat fork

Soup ladle

You should also keep handy tin foil, wax paper and plastic wrap. Often times you will need these items to cover foods or to set hot food on.

If appropriate, read labels to identify that the items are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Many of the items listed can be used interchangeably when needed.

As you start to cook your favorite dishes, you will learn which things you need the most and will probably want to start expanding your utensil shelves and drawers.
