Border Collie dogs are great fun and beautiful to watch, too. And who can forget the movie 'Babe" and the long-haired black and white dogs that the little pig tried to imitate. But these graceful canines behold more than just your senses can take in.

Beyond their beauty and endless energy, these dogs have a fierce need to herd sheep and rarely are content unless they are doing so every minute and hour of each and every day. Despite the occasional person who is able to house them in town, these dogs are not suited to such living situations.

The Border Collie is bred to herd and they will herd anything given the chance. So, if you have other stock at your property such as horses or cattle, think about whether you want a herding dog around. They can be the perfect dog for such a place but only if trained properly.

These lovable dogs love to run and can do so for what seems like forever. If you did have one of these shepherds in town, daily walks and free run of a yard would be the ideal situation. But a Border Collie let to its own accord in your yard will often try to dig holes to China. If they are unable to release their energy by herding they will release it any other way.

Border Collies can be the very best of companions. Many a farmer and rancher takes their black and white dog with them everywhere they go. And if they have free run on a farm, they can be taught easily to stay on the property. Border Collies are eager to please and this is a real advantage when training a new dog.

When you decide you want to buy a Border Collie there are several place to start looking. Feed stores will often have bulletin boards where animals are listed for sale. That, and the local classifieds will lead you to some breeders. There is also the Northern America Border Collie Rescue group which has local organizations which rescue and adopt out unwanted Border Collies.

You may wonder why anyone would give up their beautiful pet? Well, for one, Border Collies don't make good pets as dogs kept in houses or expected to be left alone while the family is gone all day. They desperately need attention and activity and if they do not get it they will start chewing and digging a path to where they can get it.

The best place for one of these energetic herding dogs is on a farm or ranch where running all day is exactly what they will be doing.
